Fire: Compartmentation

Most buildings are made up of different rooms and area’s that form compartments. An important aspect of fire protection, is having robust compartmentation to help prevent the spread of fire both horizontally and vertically throughout the building.

If a fire starts in a compartment, the idea is that it can be contained in that compartment for a minimum of 30 minutes until the Fire Brigade arrive.

Services must pass through compartment walls and as a result, if not properly fire stopped can result in a breach in the compartment.

Where the compartment is breached, the fire barrier must be stopped up to provide adequate fire protection once the services are in place.

As pictured from one of our recent fire risk assessments, the compartmentation breach has been effectively fire stopped around the services and will provide an effect 60 minute fire barrier within the riser, should a fire in this compartment start.
